Coronavirus Update #2

Jessica Edmonds, Assistant Secretary, City of Leicester NEU
17th May 2020

I'd like to start by drawing your attention to the comprehensive information on the NEU website connected to Coronavirus. If you have a query, please check there in the first instance.

We are also particularly concerned about the racial disparities in Covid-19.

We are aware that there are many concerns surrounding a wider reopening of schools, and our district meeting this week was attended by just under 100 members. All reps should have received a template letter, and they should discuss that with their members to send to their head teacher. We know that school leaders have been put in a very difficult position following the Prime Minister's announcement, so please make sure the letter is adapted to suit the setting you are in.

Many heads are voicing concerns such as these, so please let's try to work with our school leaderships to ensure that the NEU 5 tests are met, and that schools can open more widely when it is safe to do so. At the present time, the NEU does not think it is safe to open to nursery, reception and year 1 on 1st June. This opinion is shared by all education unions within the TUC, and you can read the joint statement here.

In solidarity,
Jessica Edmonds
